Virsa Looking for Volunteers – Deadline July 16th

Virsa is currently looking for volunteers for their SOURCE Mentorship Program and SAFE Outreach Program. If you want to contribute to the community in a positive way by working with and motivating at-risk youth, then these volunteer opportunities are ideal for you!
———-

WHAT (SOURCE Mentorship):

The goal of SOURCE Mentorship is to provide resources and support to at-risk South Asian adolescents. By sending positive role models from the community, we are able to act as a support system and as a referral guide to the youth in any sector of their lives. Our volunteer mentors (between the ages of 19 – 30 years of age) go into a school assigned to them and help youth with things like goal setting (personal and/or academic), academics, career/school choices, and personal problems. Furthermore, we invite guest speakers, hold large group discussions, and work on community projects. All of our efforts are geared toward empowering our youth and overall improve their image into a positive one. This is a school-based program that takes place once a week after-school (any day of the week from Monday-Thursday) for 1.5hours (2:45pm-4:30pm), and runs for the entire school years, therefore we require a 10 month commitment. (Sept. 06 – June 07).

WHAT (SAFE Outreach):

Another youth program that we have is SAFE outreach. Here volunteers are paired up with trained youth workers, and each team goes out to high-risk areas to deal with street youth, every Friday/Saturday nights. Volunteers interact with youth and provide them with resources and make referrals to youth clinics, etc. Our volunteers range in age from 19-30 years.

WHO:

We are looking for volunteers, age 19-30, that are passionate and want to give something back to the community. Volunteering with Virsa is a great way to meet other individuals who are putting efforts forth to provide youth with opportunities and support. Not only will you be serving the community, but you will have a fun time doing it.

Also, this a great learning experience for those interested in pursuing careers in Education, Criminology, Social Work, etc.
