I wonder Gurdwaras are full of elderly people and they force us, the youth, to listen what they themselves want to listen. Why the youth cannot have a say in the Sunday program, many of us are free and can go there on Sunday, if some part of the program is designed to interest us. Many of us can do kirtan, share a sakhi, and participate actively. Many Gurdwaras have Istri Satsang Sabha, why not Youth Satsang Sabha? And why are not youth co-opted in local gurdwara management committee, so that we have a say in what the program should be like. If the elders do not want us to participate every Sunday, then at least one Sunday a month, we youth should be allowed to run the Sunday program and the elders should silently sit and listen what we have to offer. Otherwise, why should we be forced to listen every Sunday, what the elders design and want to listen?
Conclusion:
I think Youth should be made to participate in management and programs of Gurdwara.
I would also like to add that it would give such self worth to the youth plus be an excellent example and also might help bring in more activity from a wider range of youth.
Sorry I just want to add that, the youth is our future they should be apart of the now.
Dear Masala Mom,
We really appreciate your comments.
You made some excellent comments and we especially liked your statement that “the youth is our future, they should be apart of the now.” Because without planting seeds now, we will have nothing to reap in the future. If we involved the youth in decisions and helped them to practice Sikhi, there may be less political battles in Gurdwara committees and a more balanced focus. Also today’s youth are more open minded but at the same time many of the youth are very dedicated. When you are dedicated but also open minded, you can make a lot of good things happen in the gurdwara, like social and community assistance programs, child and womens programs, counseling and health programs, etc. and also very importantly, more keertans and simrans for youth, by youth.
Once again thanks for sharing your comments.
Vaheguru ji ka khalsa,
Vaheguru ji ki fatheh !
I also think this is very important, to reach out to other youth I think the sikh youth need to start stepping up and organizing their own programs
Only youth really truly know what other youth need and are dealing with, they have a sense of what is important right now and what the sikh youth as a whole should be focussing on rightnow
Youth should step up and take involvement in running Gurdwaray or programs, even learning how to do all the different sevas and learning how to do paat properly
because when we grow up who else will be there to run sikhi? no one, the future is in the youth only
if we don’t take charge then who will
