A new Sikh temple has been approved for Newton.
Hundreds of people packed Surrey council chambers Monday night to voice their positions on the application by the Canadian Ramgarhia Society to build a 21,000-square-foot temple at 8361 140 St.
Most of the speakers were supportive of the project.
Those opposed to it voiced concern about traffic problems on 140 Street as people headed to worship on Sunday file into the temple. It’s expected there will be upwards of 250 people attending on the weekend.
One resident said his small cul-de-sac already had problems with cars turning around in his area to access another nearby church.
“A hundred and fifty cars a day do U-turns in our cul-de-sac,” he said.
Council approved the project, but asked proponents to address concerns raised about traffic and parking.
