Thousands expected for murdered mom’s funeral
Matthew Ramsey, CanWest News Service; Vancouver Province
Published: Sunday, October 29, 2006
VANCOUVER — Thousands of mourners are expected to attend a public funeral being organized for slain mother and teacher Manjit Panghali, says the Surrey, B.C. woman’s grieving family. The funeral is tentatively planned for next weekend in Delta, B.C.
The service will be open to the public and family members from around the world are expected to attend.
Panghali’s devastated family sought solace in Sikh prayer this weekend while police cautioned the public to be patient as they hunt for the woman’s killer.
“There are things that need to come out further. There will be a time and a place for us to talk, but right now we are praying,” said Tur Basra, Panghali’s younger brother.
Panghali’s colleagues, her students and their parents at Surrey’s North Ridge elementary left flowers and messages of mourning at the school in the young teacher’s memory. Panghali, mother of a 3/12-year-old girl, taught a Grade 1 class at North Ridge.
Four months pregnant with her second child, Panghali disappeared Oct. 18 after attending a pre-natal yoga class.
Her husband Mukhtriar Panghali reported the disappearance to RCMP 26 hours later.
Police in Delta confirmed Thursday that a body disfigured by fire found earlier in the week was that of the 30-year-old.
Delta Police said updates on the investigation may be days or weeks away.
As police probe the murder, a criminal harassment case against Mukhtiar’s brother Sukhvinder Panghali, 26, has been fast-tracked through Richmond, B.C., court.
The charge against the aircraft mechanic was laid in September. The woman he allegedly harassed has since moved from her Richmond home.
Sukhvinder’s lawyer Marvin Stern said the fast-tracking was an effort “to try and dispel any connection” between the harassment charge and the murder of Manjit Panghali.
“The two investigations don’t have anything to do with each other,” Stern said Saturday.

DELTA, B.C. — The parents and siblings of slain teacher Manjit Panghali gathered Sunday around a simple white cross marking the spot her charred remains were found last week on a rocky south Delta, B.C., shore.
Panghali’s brother Tur Basra said it was extremely difficult, but important for the family to see the place their beloved member was found last Monday.
“I went there first myself, just me and the investigator,” Basra said. “And then I wanted everyone else to come.”
It was slightly easier because of the makeshift memorial with Panghali’s photograph on the cross and pots of flowers surrounded by granite stones.
The cross was put up Saturday by Panghali’s best friend Laura Hunger, who went to the place and was upset that nothing yet had been placed to commemorate the life of the popular teacher.
“We were shocked that there was nothing at the site,” Hunger’s husband Chris said Sunday.
Hunger is also friends with Panghali’s husband Mukhtiar or MP.
“I was at MP’s house just after he was told what had happened,” Hunger said. “I just want to get to the bottom of this.”
Thousands are expected at the funeral of Panghali next Saturday at at Delta’s Five Rivers crematorium. Relatives are flying in from England, India and elsewhere for the high-profile service.
Mukhtiar Panghali, who is also a Surrey, B.C., teacher, reported his wife missing to RCMP about 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, more than a day after he says he last saw her as she left for a pre-natal yoga class.
He said the class was in Whalley, but the Sun revealed it was in fact in south Surrey and that Panghali attended and left about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 18 without incident.
Delta police officially confirmed the worst Thursday, announcing that a burned body found three days earlier in south Delta was that of the young mother, who was four months pregnant with her second child.
Her car was found by Surrey RCMP the same day that her body was discovered 30 kilometres away on a route used by truckers to access a container terminal.
Delta police are investigating the murder, with the co-operation of Surrey RCMP and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
Delta Const. Sharlene Brooks said police would not comment on the nature of the probe, whether there are any suspects or whether the murder was targeted. However, police have not been publicly warning women in the area to be on the lookout for a random predator.
Panghali, who taught grade 1 at Cloverdale’s North Ridge elementary, had been upset about a criminal harassment charge against her brother-in-law Sukhvinder Singh Panghali.
Sukhvinder, who lived with his brother and sister-in-law, was charged Sept. 5 for allegedly threatening a former girlfriend over a three-month period last summer.
Sukhvinder Panghali moved out of the house just before Panghali vanished to save her the embarrassment of being connected to his legal troubles, lawyer Marvin Stern said.
Stern said Richmond RCMP twice visited the Cloverdale home because of the criminal harassment case and that Panghali was upset because she was president of the neighbourhood’s Block Watch program.
But Stern also said Sukhvinder Panghali’s case has nothing to do with his sister-in-law’s murder andthat he is devastated by the loss.
It’s really sad and disturbing to hear such a tragic end for a pregnant female. This morning after reading various news/blogs for “Manjit Panghali” especially that Laura and Chris had set-up a cross at the site where the body was found, I myself wanted to go (“Laura – YOU are a TRUE FRIEND indeed”). As I drove along Deltaport Way, the long narrow stretch of road with railway tracks on one end and the ocean on the other; and on the road itself there were just big container trucks on either side. The drive seemed very scary, at one point I wanted to take a U-turn. But as I kept going, with tears in my eyes, I saw another vehicle and a person taking video of the scene. I stepped out and asked if this was the place where Manjit’s body was found. It was and the person who was there was a correspondent from CTV. He asked me if I was family or friend…I said “Neither…I just heard the news and just felt like visiting”. I placed some flowers at the cross and sat there for a while. I touched one of the many rocks that had turned black from burning and prayed.
My deepest condolences to Manjit’s family.
Lots of love to Maya – GOD will take care of you – little innocent child – in HIS many ways.
Its such a sad happening. My condolence to the family and prayer to Baba ji to give peace and rest to the departed soul… May waheguru bless Maya with a life full of care and love from family and friends of her mom. And whoever did this, has committed a crime against Manjit, her little daughter Maya, the baby in her tummy, and against the humanity as a whole… and there should be a punishment with a strong message for that person.
May Waheguru bless us with a sense of right and wrong.
GS
It is so sad…what has humanity come to worse then wild animals.
Our prayers are with Maya .We all will always pray for you.
I beleive there is God and he will bring all to justice. He is supreme power and no one can fool him.May His son jesus always be with u little one.Whoever has done this will have to face the wrath of God………
Thank you all for your comments. Please show your support for the family and friends by coming to the funeral services and prayer services on Saturday.
I just wanted to give my deepest condolences to Manjit Panghali’s family, most especially her daughter, Maya. To Manjit’s own family, I cannot imagine what it must be like for a parent to lose a child, to lose a sister, or to lose a spouse, but my thoughts and prayers are with ALL of you. To take one’s life, period, is a crime in itself, but it is a graver crime to take the lives of a mother and her unborn child, no matter what the laws of this world are. God is not blind to this and HIS justice shall prevail in HIS time. May God lead and guide each of you during this trial. Respectfully yours, Richelle
My deepest condolences to the Basra family and to Manj’s little angel – Maya. Manjit was a lovely person – she was an angel – she could make anyone smile. Manj and I went to high school and univeristy together and she made my life so much easier..she was a great friend. Why would anyone want to murder her? I hope whoever the psychopath is suffers by spending the rest of his life in prison. The police need to find out who did this – Manj did not deserve to die, her newborn did not deserve to die, Maya had the right to have her mother in her life. My ardas is with the Manjit’s family and Maya – may Vaheguru help you through this very very difficult time. Vaheguru ji….
We would like to express our deepest condolences to Manjit’s family and especially to her daughter Maya. Manjit was a caring and compassionate person, who did not deserve any of this. She is mourned by the whole community, because of the wonderful human being that she was. We hope that the person who committed this atrocious crime will be brought to justice soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with Manjit’s family, we hope somehow you find the strength to go on by remembering the beautiful memories she has left behind. May Vaheguru guide you through this difficult time.
A tale of two murders
By Justin Beddall
Nov 03 2006
Simone Rossette’s daughter’s murder didn’t make front-page news. “My daughter was brutally murdered and she was just a little (story in the newspaper),” recalled the grieving Surrey mother, who is bracing herself for the one-year anniversary of her daughter’s murder on Nov. 22, 2005.
Tasha Rossette, a stunning, raven-haired 21-year-old, was four months pregnant when she was discovered by her older sister, strangled, shot and stabbed to death at a residence in the 14200 block of 72 Avenue.
Before the brutal attack, Rossette had won a stuffed teddy bear at a bingo hall. The bear was found beside her body.
Since the slaying, the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has released little information about the unsolved case.
Rossette is frustrated by the lack of progress made by the detectives — and bewildered by the dearth of press coverage the case has garnered.
“Right from the start (the police) didn’t want any publicity,” she said.
“They said it would hinder the case.”
Rossette now says she feels pangs of regret for not seeking out the press.
“Yes I do, because I’ve seen so many cases (solved) because of publicity.”
“I think keeping it out of the media has stopped us from finding the killers,” added Rossette, who has another explanation for the lack of coverage – because they’re minorities.
She says her daughter, of Latin descent, entered an arranged marriage to an Indo-Canadian man who left after her daughter’s murder, leaving her to raise her granddaughter, now four years old.
Rossette believes IHIT recently decided to seek out the public’s assistance in the cold case by issuing a press release and photo of her daughter for two reasons: they don’t have anything, and because of the recent spate of news coverage surrounding two Indo-Canadian murder cases in Surrey.
Rossette’s story has gone vastly under-reported compared to the recent murder of Manjit Panghali.
The 30-year-old elementary school teacher is Surrey’s 11th murder victim of the year, but no other homicide case in recent memory has attracted nearly so much press.
Why the disparity? Both were pregnant Surrey mothers murdered in cold blood. Both were innocent victims. Both young and beautiful.
The high-profile Panghali case counters Rossette’s claim that racial minorities are ignored.
The disparity in the coverage probably had more to do with the fact that Manjit’s story started as a missing person case – along with press conferences and emotional family pleas for the safe return of their loved one.
Drama built as the search for the missing teacher continued, and as speculation about who may have killed her spread from coffee shops and temples to newsrooms and the blogosphere.
The horrific nature of the murder – her body discovered badly charred – also fuelled the public outcry and desire to have the killer brought to justice.
Thousands are expected for Manjit’s funeral 12:30 Saturday at the Riverside Funeral home in Delta, which will again cause a torrent of news coverage.
Rossette just hopes her daughter’s story isn’t lost in the latest news blitz. At first, she worried that speaking to the press might put her family in danger, but now realizes the case is getting cold. Maybe some news coverage will generate a new lead.
“I sure hope so,” she said.
If you have information about the murder of Tasha Rossette, call St. Sgt Jeff Young at 604-598-4619 or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-Tips.
At such a tragic time, my thoughts & prayers are with Manjit’s family. A truly unimaginable loss for the family indeed. How someone could be so cruel to such a gentle soul, that was carrying another life within her, is beyond comprehension. May the Almightly grant Manjit’s family the strength to bear this loss with dignity, & may her soul rest in peace. Amen.
I went to the funeral today, very sad environment. I’m a student of Mr. Panghali and well I just went there to pay my respects to his wife. She seemed like a great person who touched many lives.
She will surely not be forgotten.
B.C. family mourns murdered pregnant woman
A Final Goodbye to Manjit Panghali
Dear Manjit,
Our paths may have crossed at some point without my knowing but now it is too late. I see your pictures with Maya and you always look like a glam Bollywood star. I read every bit of comment hoping to make sense but it is too sore to even think about.
My horror at what happened to you and other Sikh women this past year has cut too deep to ever heal without a scar with images of the descriptive horrors playing over in my mind and keeping sleep away from my eyes. You and all the other victims whose descriptions of their horrifying deaths still so vivid in my mind.
I hope that all the prayers have sent your soul to a resful sleep and that neither you nor the others’ souls are are kept awake from a well deserved rest.
Rest in peace and I will try to forget.
Love.
I don’t know where to put this, but I want to send my condolences to Manjit’s family. I was hoping that she would be found alive. I will pray for you and know that you are being thought of all over the world, even here in Israel. With kind thoughts,
Amanda
I’ve been deeply touched by this case. I pray for the little child, Maya, who is probably wondering where her Mama is. May God bless Maya and Manjit’s family and give them the strength to move forward. I pray that there will be justice for Manjit. God bless all of you and thank for this site where the public can post their feelings.
Thank you all for your heartfelt comments.
I pray for the family and all the loved ones who have lost Manjit. I never knew her but I could see the beauty of her soul in her eyes. The Almighty sees all, the guilty will be punished.
What a terrible loss. You are all in my thoughts.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,
Guruji has many paths for all of us to take, and now we must assume that He needed for a bigger purpose,
it is sad that she had to leave the world in such a horrific way, but we must stand strong and give her family support in understanding that this sadness should be overcome with good thoughts about the amazing person she was, so that her daughter can see that her mother was truly an angel,
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
The family has created a Memorial Website for Manjit Panghali. Please visit http://www.manjitpanghali.org to post condolences. The family would love to hear from you.
As you may already now, Mukhtiar and Sukhvinder Panghali have been arrested and charged. Mukhtiar, 35, is charged with second-degree murder and improperly interfering with a dead body, while Sukhvinder, 27, is charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder and interfering with a dead body.
The family of Manjit has put their personal statement at their website. Please visit http://www.ManjitPanghali.org for information.
