According to a recent article in the Vancouver Sun, descendants of the Sikhs who travelled to Canada in 1914 on the Komagata Maru are requesting open discussions with the government about plans for an official apology and compensation for the racist immigration laws and inhumaine treatment of Sikh refugees.
A meeting was held in Richmond on Monday, May 22, which was attended by three grandsons and a great-grandson of some of the passengers aboard Komagata Maru, in addition to some politicians and media persons. Ideas proposed for recognition of the event and the mistreatment those Sikhs faces included compensation, educational programs, memorials and other methods. The consensus, however, was that whatever decisions are made should be with the consulation and approval of the community as a whole.
