March 8, 2007 - Congratulations to Navpreet Kaur Sidhu who completed her High School studies in 2006 achieving top marks of 98% average which was the highest mark achieved in her entire College Heights High School in Prince George. In 2005, the University of Northern British Columbia offered Navpreet a head start program where she was able to take University Courses while finishing her high school at the same time. In 2006, Navpreet won a total of five scholarships awards achieving the highest marks. Two of these scholarships were offered to Navpreet by the University of Northern British Columbia situated in Prince George. The first scholarship is called the Scholars Award which sums up to a tuition free undergraduate degree. The second scholarship offered by the UNBC is called the Raven Scholarship where she was granted a cash award of several thousand dollars. The remaining three scholarships were cash awards of several thousand dollars offered by the Canfor Company of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and the College Heights High School in Prince George.

Navpreet has been top student in her all of her classes starting from grade one and onwards. Navpreet has excelled academically and in sports as well. Navpreet started playing the sport of Tae-Kwon-Do when she was seven years old, after she had learned the sport of Figure Skating. In 2003, Navpreet won her First Degree Black Belt in Tae-Kwon-Do. In swimming, Navpreet, achieved top level called the Life Saver where she can be a Life Guard. Navpreet has achieved these heights in academics and sports by staying drugs and alcohol free and working hard. Navpreet continues to achieve top marks in her class at the University where she is pursuing a degree in Biochemistry after which she will pursue her goal in medicine. Navpreet learned to speak, write, and read Punjabi from her parents at home. In 2004, Navpreet took the challenge exam in Punjabi in Delta, BC and received a grade equivalent to grade 12 Punjabi. Navpreet teaches Punjabi to younger children and does Kirtan at the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Prince George every Sunday. Navpreet’s diet is truly vegetarian and instead of listening to radio stations or rock music, she listens to the Gurbani Kirtan from Sikhnet, even when she is sleeping. Navpreet also does volunteer work at the Prince George Regional Hospital and for the Canadian Cancer Society where she is the team Captain and each year raises several thousands of dollars in donations.

Navpreet says that all her success would not have been possible without the support of her two younger sisters, her father who is member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and her mother who stayed home to ensure that Navpreet learned all the good Sikh values. Navpreet is truly an achiever in life and an excellent example for rest of the children in our community.

Navpreet is in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program at UNBC. “This is a great place to study,” she says. “UNBC provides opportunities to get involved in sports, community, and other extracurricular activities.” Navpreet also appreciates how UNBC promotes multiculturalism. In fact, the University attracts students from about 40 countries each year and there are several cultural clubs on campus.
