SURREY - The Sikh community of BC dealt with a tragedy this week as four people lost their lives when the car driven by Abbotsford resident Gurtej Singh Aulakh, 41, collided with an oncoming vehicle near the Pattullo Bridge in Surrey this Monday (January 02) afternoon.

Pattullo Bridge Accident At approximately 4:40pm on Monday, Gurtej Singh’s 1997 four-door Chevrolet Cavalier went out of control and slid into oncoming traffic just south of the bridge on King George Highway. The car collided with an oncoming 2000 four-door Pontiac Grand Am, which spun off in the opposite direction. The damage to the vehicles was extensive as evidenced in the photograph to the right (Source: Ric Ernst, The Province).

Thankfully, the 29 year old Surrey woman driving the Grand Am, her 29-year old husband, their three year old daughter, and one-year-old son survived the horrific accident. However, Gurtej Singh, his wife Swarnjeet Kaur, 39, and his mother Punjab Kaur, 79, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident while Gurtej Singh’s father Hakam Singh, 81, passed away in hospital as a result of his injuries.

According to family friend and spokesman Jarnail Singh Gill, “They were raising their family. [Gurtej Singh] was a hard working guy. He was a trucker and he was self-employed.” Others noted that their family was well known in the BC Sikh community and “they will be sadly missed.”

Swarnjeet Kaur and Gurtej Singh had two sons, aged 10 and 13, who are now staying with other family members. Surely it will be an extremely difficult challenge for these young boys, to lose both parents, and grandparents, at such a young age. We humbly request each and every member of the Sikh community of BC to make special time to pray with all of your heart for the souls of these four individuals and for the two young children who have been orphaned. Whatever has happened is in God’s will - now we must make an effort to send our prayers and wishes to the children that Guru Ji may bless them with love, courage, peace, and the inner strength to accept hukam of Akaal Purakh.

The funeral service has not yet been announced but we assume it may be announced on Punjabi radio stations in Surrey / Abbotsford or in Punjabi newspapers. If anybody has further information, please let us know by e-mail at info@bcsikhyouth.com
