Two Khalsa School Surrey weightlifters to represent Canada in world championship
June 3rd, 2006 by adminKhalsa School Surrey Weightlifting Club coach Makhan Sandhu must surely be one amazing coach because his trainees just keep winning medals left and right.
Now two of his trainees on the BC team, Jasbir Singh and Joke Adekola, have made him proud once again by bagging the gold medals in the men’s and women’s sections respectively in their weight categories in the Senior (Open) Canadian Weightlifting Championship held in Montreal on May 20-21.
Based on their performance, both of them have qualified to represent Canada in the World Weightlifting Championship being held in the Dominican Republic from September 27 to October 8.
Sandhu thanked the Khalsa School administration and management for providing their facilities free of cost to his weightlifters.
Other BC team members did well, too, with Sophia Sandhu and Kaley Hansen winning silver and Rob Gray and Katelin William bagging bronze. Patric Milford and Walter Bailey were also members of the BC team. Team leader Guy Grevette and Makhan Sandhu represented BC as coaches.
Meanwhile, four Khalsa School Surrey weightlifting club members won gold medals in the BC High School Weightlifting Championship held at Kelowna on May 13. Harinder Mahey, Onkar Sandhu, Amrinder Sahota and Prabdeep Sanghera all won gold and created new BC high school records. Also, Mandeep Randhawa and Harvey Sahota got silver and bronze medals respectively.
In February, the club won the A&R Memorial BC weightlifting championship held at Port Alberni.
And a month earlier, six weightlifters from the club participated in the Junior National Weightlifting Championship held in Ottawa and Joke Adekola won a gold medal and was declared Best Junior Weightlifter in Canada, while another member, Prabdeep Sanghera, who is just 12 years old, won a silver medal.
In April, the club won the BC Junior Weightlifting team championship with 813 points at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, Cloverdale. Harinder Mahey won the title of Best Junior (under 20 years of age) Weightlifter in the men’s section, while Katelynn William of Semi took the women’s title.
