Tanraj Sohal wins BC Chess Championship again
April 22nd, 2006 by admin
Tanraj Sohal, a nine-year-old Grade 4 Surrey student, won the BC Provincial Chess Championship in his grade level on April 15 at the BCIT in Burnaby.
Earlier, he had won the Fraser Valley Regional Chess Championship held in Surrey on March 25.
This is the fourth year in a row that Tanraj has won the Fraser Valley Regional and BC Provincial Chess Championships. Tanraj is also a 2004 and 2005 Canadian Chess Champion in his grade level. Tanraj along with other provincial winners will be representing the BC Chess Team at the Canadian Chess Challenge to be held in Moncton, New Brunswick, on the Victoria Day weekend in May.
BC’s team will comprise Janak Awatramani (Grade1), Harrison Lee (Grade 2), Alex Sabaratnam (Grade 3), Tanraj Sohal (Grade 4), Jack Cheng (Grade 5), Gabriel Panaitiu (Grade 6), Elliot Raymer (Grade 7), Kristijan Gorgvik (Grade 8), Ritik Looned (Grade 9), Lo-Ching Chow (Grade 10), Jingei Li (Grade 11), Lucas Davies (Grade 12). Nine winners are from Vancouver, two from Victoria and one from Delta (Lo-Ching Chow). Tanraj is the only student from Surrey to be in the BC team.
Two years ago, Tanraj’s dad, Fleetwood family physician Dr. Parmjit Sohal, told The VOICE that Tanraj started playing chess in Grade 1. He said: “I thought of getting him interested in chess because I personally love playing chess. And he sort of picked up very quickly. And then he joined his school chess club, when normally they allow only kids Grade 4 and up to participate. They made an exception because of his talent.’
