Sikh Youth Committee - New Westminster Gurdwara Election
September 10th, 2006 by adminPress Release
Khalsa Diwan Society, New Westminster Membership nominates Sikh Youth Committee to contest Sept. 10th Elections
Under the Presidency of Harbhajan Singh Athwal, Sikh Youth vow to change the face of Gurdwara Management if elected.
New Westminster, B.C., August 23, 2006: Taking a historical step in British Columbia, the general membership of Khalsa Diwan Society, New Westminster nominated an all youth slate to run in the September 10th election. If elected, the Sikh Youth Committee vows to revolutionize Gurdwara management by attracting youth back to the Gurdwara through programs and special events while meeting the needs of local residents and seniors.
The slate is led by long time New Westminster sevadaar Harbhajan Singh Athwal who has served on the Executive Committee in the past as required by the constitution of the Society. Although there were a total of three committees nominated, the slate of Nachatter Singh Sodhi withdrew its nomination citing that the youth deserves support from all sides in this historical effort.
The Sikh Youth Committee will attempt to reach out to the close to 10,000 members to spread their new message of ‘passing on the torch’ and ‘a new era of seva’ in Gurdwara Management. Bikramjit Singh Sandher, long time community sevadaar and nominee for Vice-President commented on the situation saying, “Our goal is to bring in new, bold, and innovative ways of providing services to the Sangat from all sorts of backgrounds. We have lacked youth involvement in Gurdwaras in the past and this is a chance for our elders to put behind their differences and support a neutral party: The Youth.”
As young and older volunteers pour into Campaign Headquarters in Surrey, the atmosphere is full of energy and a drive for change, one that will see our youth and seniors provided with programs that will make their lives both fuller and richer. Most importantly, there is a drive to preserve the history and sentiments of 1914, when our Sikh Pioneers established the Khalsa Diwan Society, New Westminster.
On September 10th, a vote for Harbhajan Singh Athwal and the Youth Slate is a vote for a brighter future.
