Sikh youth appeals for help in paying cost of winning rights case

Gurbaj Singh Multani MontrealSURREY - The Sikh youth who made headlines by winning a Supreme Court case allowing him to wear a kirpan to school is now asking his community for monetary help.

Gurbaj Singh Multani, a Sikh student from Montreal, is asking Canadian Sikhs to help him repay $150,000 he borrowed from a Sikh temple in the Quebec city for his legal bill. So far, he’s raised $70,000. Donations from local Indo-Canadians are sought through the efforts of Punjabi radio stations.

In a recent ruling, the court reversed a decision of the Montreal school board barring Multani from wearing his kirpan, a dagger-like article of faith worn by Sikhs.

Multani attended Surrey’s recent Vaisakhi parade and made an appeal for money. He told the Now newspaper from Montreal that “since it was the victory of the entire Sikh community, I need their help to pay back the money.”
