Mundey Kuri Di Lohri

The event below is an inspiring change in the events of the BC Punjabi community. It is a family event, with no drinking or vulgar music, and it is promoting social awareness about gender equality. Furthermore it is raising funds for a good cause. And most likely there will be a lot of Sikh youth or Sikh families in attendance. Here is an article about it - Mundey Kuri Di Lohri - from the Voice Online.
Lohri, has now become an annual event that is cherished and looked forward to by many South Asian families of the Lower Mainland. Since Lohri falls in the winter, this festival adds to the flavor of the season of festivities and creates colors and brightness in the otherwise dark and cold days of the winter season. The “Mundey Kuri Dee Lohri” that was started last year under the aegis of Trinajan Folk Academy with the support of Janta Sewak Society, Chetna Association of Canada, and many other religious and social organizations was well received, according to Amrinder Ghuman of Trinajn Folk Academy. Ghuman said that a few weeks ago she started receiving calls from many encouraging her to also organize Lohri celebrations in 2006.
One of the key factors that led Ghuman to organize Lohri again is that the Mundey Kurri Dee Lohri left a social message of gender equality without leaving any baggage or anyone feeling that they were being preached to. It also provided opportunity to many prominent women to come on the stage, share their stories, and be role models for young women and their families.
The Mundey kurri Dee Lohri 2006 is expected to be a great event of joy and celebrations for the young and the young at the heart. Similar to last year’s Lohri, Lohri 2006 will provide a bonfire, sugar cane juice, door prizes, cultural performances, and all the other aspects of Lohri celebrations in India, says Ghuman. This will also provide an environment of festivity to families to celebrate the birth of their child, the wedding of their sons or daughters, and even celebrate their own birthday or wedding anniversary.
All are encouraged to attend and celebrate their special occasions amongst friends. Lohri will be celebrated on Sunday, January 15 at the Surrey’s Dhaliwal Banquet Hall on 128 Street (near 82 Ave). Proceeds from the Lohri will be shared among Pratham and Delta Hospital. In addition, the proceeds will be given to the families of fire victims who lost their two daughters in a fire accident in Calgary recently. Donations and sponsorships to support these causes will be accepted graciously. For tickets or other information, call Amrinder (Amy) Kaur Ghuman at 604-612-4586 or e-mail at trinjan@hotmail.com.
