Interfaith Discussion & Book Launch
November 5th, 2006 by admin
Announcing an
Interfaith Event at the Vancouver Public Library
Thursday November 30 at 7:30 pm; Free
How do we develop empathy for people of other spiritual paths?
Join a discussion on this critical and timely topic with:
- Bishop Michael Ingham from the Diocese of New Westminster, Anglican Church of Canada;
- Victor Chan founder of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace;
- Tony DuMoulin from Canadian Jewish Congress;
- Nafees Shams from the Muslim-Jewish Feed the Hungry Program; and,
- Bhupinder Singh, from Gurmat Center of Abbotsford.
Often violence has at its core a failure to see the other person as equally human. You can understand someone and still kill them. However, if you empathize with other person, even if you don’t understand them or disagree with them, you will find a way to coexist with them. But what is empathy and how is it achieved? The interfaith panel will explore this issue along with participation from the audience.
To lead off the evening Laura Partland, a Vancouver vocalist and lyricist, will be performing original songs from her c.d., The Flowering, a mystical and musical exploration about coming into being - the soul’s flowering. Bonnie Nish, of Pandora’s Collective, will be reading her poem “Crying Out Loud in Jerusalem”
This event is the centerpiece of the launch of the new interfaith book Illuminations (www.IlluminationsBook.com). Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Marianne Williamson, Julia Cameron and Fatima Gailani, in addition to over 180 writers and artists from 43 countries, contributed personal stories and art specifically for Illuminations which express their questions and struggles with their faith. Illuminations is a not for profit project of Evolving Editions, LLC.
