A turban competition organized on Sunday by Sher-e-Punjab Radio (AM 1550) was a grand success with 170 participants in age categories from 3 to 70 years. More than 1,500 people streamed to the Surrey venue to watch the International Turban Day event that was emceed by the radio’s talk show host Prof. Gurvinder Singh Dhaliwal.

Among the special guests were Sukh Dhaliwal, M.P. for Newton-North Delta, former M.P. Gurmant Grewal, MLAs Sue Hammell, Raj Chouhan and Jagrup Brar, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. The chief guest was Singhsahib Giani Gurbachan Singh, Secretary, Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, who gave away the prizes of gold khandey and a variety of gifts.

Radio Director Ajit Singh Badh thanked the participants, some of whom came from as far away as California, Edmonton and Winnipeg, and the guests. Jagrup Brar was honoured on the occasion for introducing the Five K’s motion in the B.C. Legislature. This event in fact was a celebration of that recognition. There were also performances of Bhangra, Gatka (Sikh martial arts) and songs about the turban.
