Sikh student Damanpreet Kaur, age 8, wins computer in path reciting contest

Ludhiana, September 25: DAMANPREET Kaur, a Class III student of the city, was given a computer as a prize for the Sri Sukhmani Sahib Kanth and Vichar Competition.

The award was given by Bhai Jasbir Singh Khalsa and Jaswinder Singh of the Guru Nanak Trust, Manchester, at Gurdwara Sukhmani Sahib, Phase-II, Dugri, here.

Born on February 5, 1998, Damanpreet Kaur can recite by heart all 24 astpadis of the sacred scripture. She is also good at academics. Her sisters, Supreet Kaur, a student of MA I, and Jasleen Kaur, a B.Com second year student, can recite 16 banis of Sri Guru Granth Sahib by heart.

A total of 2,058 students participated in the competition spread over 18 centres in Ludhiana, Patiala, Sunam, Delhi, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. Another student, Amandeep Singh, of Class VI from Mohali won a bicycle for reciting the full text of the Sukhmani Sahib.

The function was organised under the auspices of a newly-formed organisation, Sukriet. This is the society for uplifting Kirat by rejuvenating initiative, entrepreneurship and talent. The society will work for providing career guidance, coaching to needy students, vocational training, self-help project and placement services.

Each member of the Sukriet will be motivated and trained in at least five skills; Gurmat skills viz kirtan, katha, correspondence course by Sikh Missionary College; and IT skills viz computer typing, designing, e-mail, Internet.
