Community Newspaper Essay Contest (Deadline April 28)
April 4th, 2006 by adminDo you have the write stuff?
The BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA) will award some of the highest scholarship bursaries in British Columbia and the Yukon again this year.
Every high school graduating student in B.C. and the Yukon is eligible for the $10,000 BCYCNA and BC Press Council scholarship, making it one of the most accessible scholarships currently available. This is the sixth year in a row the two organizations have come together to bring much-needed funds to students seeking post-secondary education.
Scholarships of $5,000, $3,500 and $1,500 will be awarded to the three students who best answer the question, “If you were to spend one day as publisher of this community newspaper, what changes would you make, and why?”
Students must submit a 500-word essay to The Tri-City News by April 28 and one local finalist will be chosen. The finalists’ essays will then be forwarded to the BCYCNA, where the top three scholarship winners province-wide will be selected.
(Local entries should be mailed to The Tri-City News, 1405 Broadway St., Port Coquitlam, B.C. V3C 6L6 or emailed to publisher@tricitynews.com.)
“We are thrilled to once again be providing this opportunity for graduating high school students across BC and the Yukon to earn significant scholarship awards,” says Steve Robertson, president of the BCYCNA.
“It means a great deal to the members of the BCYCNA to be able to make this kind of contribution to the young people who live in the communities we serve.”
BCYCNA is a non-profit membership organization that was established in 1922. The association represents 105 community newspapers across B.C. and the Yukon with a combined readership of 2.5 million.
The BC Press Council was established in 1983. It is a self-regulatory body that governs the newspaper industry in B.C. Edith Nee, chair of the Press Council, says the scholarship is a great community initiative.
“We are very excited to be able to contribute to this scholarship,” says Nee. “To be able to help young people achieve their goals brings us a great deal of satisfaction. We look forward to reading the winning essays.”
The three scholarships will be awarded to the winners at their graduating ceremony by a representative of their local newspaper.
