The Ragi Jatha of Bhai Avtar Singh Ji, Bhai Kultar Singh Ji and Bhai Swarn Singh Ji represents an unbroken Gurmat Sangeet tradition that goes all the way back to the times of the Guru Arjun Dev Ji. His family then under the instruction of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji learnt and performed kirtan according to the rules of Gurmat Sangeet.
Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi has a treasure trove of kirtans preserved since the medieval time under the rubric of Gurmat Sangeet.
Bhai Sahib was awarded the Shiromani Raggi Award by the Punjab Government in 1984.
Bhai Sahib has done a valuable service by recording 500-odd compositions, annotating them and handing them over as ‘Gurbani Sangeet Pracheen Reet Ratnavali’ to the Punjabi University in Patiala. Some of these comprise the album that was produced in celebration of the Khalsa Tercentenary.
It is hoped that during the course of his visit to Surrey, he will be having kirtan programs in various Gurdwaras in the Greater Vancouver area. Exact details of his itinerary have yet to be finalized and will appear on the above-mentioned web site once it has been finalized.
