Amarjeet Kaur Chhabra for City Councillor
August 17th, 2006 by adminAmarjeet Kaur Chhabra of Scarborough is one of four winners of the Toronto wide “City Idol” competition and will run for City Council of ward 43 (Scarborough East) in the Municipal Elections in November, 2006.
Interview from the City Idol website:
Who are you?
“I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist, but a possibilist.” – Max Lerner. The name is Amarjeet and I am a student at University of Toronto at Scarborough finishing up my undergraduate studies in Life Sciences and Political Science. Having a permanent disability since the age of 4 1/2 months has in no way deterred me but only made me strong and has always wanted to make me do more. I have been characterized as the living example of the saying “If there is a will, there is a way”. In addition to being heavily involved on campus in all facets of student life currently I also serve as the Director of Special Events for the Toronto Youth Cabinet and am a member of the Youth Committee for the Canadian National Exhibition Association.
Why are you running?
Ever heard people say “youth are the future of the country”…well the future of the country wants to be involved so here I am. Among other reasons, I am also running because although the Toronto Youth Cabinet resides at City Hall we still get a lot of run around by the City Councillors who do not necessarily believe in our cause and do not support us. I want to challenge this notion and prove that as a matter of fact if you listen to the youth of today, it will only benefit us all in the future. City Idol is the perfect opportunity to accomplish this goal. Furthermore, I am also running because I want to promote civic engagement. Your city, you need to step up!!!
What should a City Councillor be?
A city councillor should act with diligence, honesty and good faith in the best interests of their constituents and furthermore not only acknowledge the needs and concerns of their constituents but act upon them because we all know actions speak louder than words.
Anything else?
“It’s not something I must do, but something I want to do” – James Fixx.
