Vaheguru ji ka khalsa,
Vaheguru ji ki fatheh!

Another popular search term is “Sikh Temples Surrey.” One would assume that the person making this search request on Google or Yahoo or MSN is actually confused with regards to the proper name for a Sikh place of worship. Here’s the basic explanation:

Sikh Temples ?

The proper name for a Sikh place of faith congregation is Gurdwara. Just like the Muslim faith has a particular name for their place of spiritual devotion called the Mosque or Masjid, and the Hindu faith has Mandir, and the Christian faith has Church, and the Jewish faith has Synagogue — in the same way, the Sikh faith has a particular name for its gathering place of spiritual devotees. This place is called Gurdwara. Gurdwara is a combination of two words - Guru, and Dwara. Guru is a further combination of two Sanskrit words, Gu, meaning Darkness, and Ru, meaning Light. Therefore a Guru is the one who enlightens. Dwara, the second half of Gurdwara, means a doorway, a gate, or an entrance. Thus the meaning of Gurdwara is the gate of the enlightener, the doorway to the path of enlightenment.

Next time you refer to the Sikh place of devotion, please use the word “Gurdwara” as it is a beautiful word that describes the greatness of the place itself, and the reasons for which we attend programs there regularly.
