Public Forum – Education Uncertainty?

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation held a strike vote on Sept 20^th.  The news raises concerns for the public.  In the Punjabi community, it is a hot discussion issue and many parents have strong feelings about the possible job action. On the other hand, many parents support the way teachers are speaking up and taking action for their students’ learning needs.

Some immigrants might blame Canadian tolerance of labour disputes, and some might question why teachers can strike when education has been legislated an essential service.

In regards to education resources and class size, the government and teachers provide contradictory messages; is it legitimate to include class size & support services in teachers’ contracts?  Should we recognize class size, support for special needs & ESL students as teachers’ working conditions?  Is no wage increase for 3 years the essential issue of the dispute?

How would a teachers’ strike affect the education system, students and parents? How would our government and school board handle it?  In view of our blooming economy and government surplus, can both sides find a common ground?  What about arbitration? What can parents do to help end this dispute?  Is it important that teachers reach a negotiated settlement rather than having a settlement imposed by the government? The foundation of a solid contract is mutual agreement on both sides. Can a settlement that is unilaterally imposed ever create harmonious relations?
